Umbrella
by Taro Yashima is about a little girl, Momo, which means peach in Japanese,
who was born in New York. On her 3rd birthday Momo receives presents
from her parents that she can’t wait to put to good use.
Throughout the book we follow Momo through the seasons of the year in her
eagerness to grow up. This wonderful Caldecott Honor book has beautiful
illustrations and Japanese symbols throughout. Perhaps the most memorable
aspect of the book is the sound the rain makes “Bon polo,
bon polo, pon polo, pon polo. This story is a wonderful
read aloud on a rainy day. (Jennifer Fletcher, gracefullyloved@gmail.com,
