During the early years of the 20th century, immigrants from all over the world flooded to Ellis Island in New York seeking a better life.  Ten-year-old Joseph and his older sister Anna and two of these immigrants.  They have left Russia behind and hope to earn enough to bring their parents to America soon.  Living with Aunt Sophie who they have never met is much different than they had imagined.  The apartment is small and they share space with a mean boarder.  Anna works long hours at the factory and Joseph is placed in first grade since he doesn't know English.  He also gets involved with some street kids who steal and lie and don't go to school.  Will America offer these two a better life?
