As if the trauma of a Great War and a widespread influenza epidemic weren’t enough for any teenage girl to deal with, Mary Shelley Black is experiencing further devastation on a deeply personal level. Her father has been arrested, she has been sent to live with an aunt in San Diego, and her childhood friend and first love, Stephen, has been shipped off to fight in the war. While those around her seek to relieve their loss and grief through séances, spirit photos, and the like, Mary Shelly determines their actions to be illogical and unscientific. Soon, however, her skepticism turns to confusion. When she learns that Stephen is dead, she must find a way to explain his recent visits to her. Are Stephen’s appearances real, or just the longings of her broken heart, or perhaps she has finally succumbed to the deadly flu and its ill effects? Why has an anguished Stephen returned to her, and what can she do to put his troubled spirit to rest?
