Cassie can't believe she is being allowed to make a pie.  With the war between the states raging, provisions have been scarce.  But mama was able to trade for some sugar and butter.  Cassie picked the huckleberries and set about making the pie.  Her younger brother and sister were getting in the way but Cassie had promised her mother that she would watch them.  When they learned that a group of Union soldiers were on their way to the house, Cassie has to think quickly to save what they can.
