Wilder, Laura Ingalls

WEST FROM HOME : LETTERS OF LAURA INGALLS WILDER TO ALMANZO WILDER, SAN FRANCISCO, 1915
New York : Harper & Row, 1974.
IL 5-8 RL 5.5
ISBN 0064400816
You probably know Laura Ingalls Wilder through her Little House on the Prairie series of books. She wrote a total of 9 books that told of her life growing up in the latter part of the 19th century. What you may not know is that Laura did not write any of these books until she was in her 60's. This book is a collection of letters that Laura wrote to her husband Almanzo during the Fall of 1915. Laura's daughter Rose had moved to San Francisco and was a successful newspaper columnist there. During the Fall of 1915, a tremendous World's Fair was being held in San Francisco. The Panama Canal was just opened and California celebrated with the Panama-Pacific International Exposition. Rose invited her mother out to attend this spectacular event. Almanzo stayed on the farm to keep the place going but sent Laura on the journey. Through Laura's daily letters home, we experience the week long journey to the coast, the people she met along the way, the awe of her first visit to the Pacific ocean and, of course, her days at the World's Fair. We also learn how Rose convinces her mother to start writing. At first Laura agrees to write for a local newspaper but, as we know now, that was just the start of her writing career! Enjoy Laura's trip west in WEST FROM HOME.
