Booktalk #1

Madec hired Ben as a guide when his name came up in the lottery for hunting a bighorn sheep.  Madec wasn’t a likable man, but Ben needed the money for college.  As Madec lined up his shot, Ben commented that he hadn’t seen any horns.  He didn’t think the sheep were still in the area Madec was targeting.  Madec took his shot and seemed confident he had taken down a
bighorn sheep.  But as they get closer to where the sheep should be, Madec starts to bargain with Ben.  He’ll double the money and offer a $100 bonus if it’s not the perfect specimen and Ben is willing to look the other way and let Madec keep hunting.  When they finally reach the area where the dead sheep should be, what Ben finds is a dead prospector.  To Ben, it’s simple.
Take the body back to the sheriff and report and accident.  To Madec, it’s inconvenient to get involved with the police.  When Ben doesn’t listen to reason, Madec forces Ben to strip to his shorts and sends him out into the desert to die.  (Mary Huebscher, Librarian, Holy Cross High School, San Antonio, TX 78228 <marwood45@hotmail.com>)

Booktalk #2

Ben needed the money for college, so he agreed to guide Maydec on a hunting trip into the desert for a bighorn sheep.  Ben quickly finds out that Maydec is not the kind of man that he would choose for company. Maydec was a cold, wheeler-dealer obsessed with the idea of having a bighorn sheep's head mounted for his L.A. office.  He was a man that was used to getting his way at all costs.  Maydec is loosing his patience and shoots at the first movement in the distance.  When Ben investigates, he discovers that Maydec has shot and killed an old prospector.  Maydec isn't about to report this and take his chances in court that it will decided to be an accident.  Ben doesn't want to go along with this so Maydec strips him of his clothing and supplies and gives him a head start.  Now Ben is Maydec's target: a boy on the run, wandering naked in the desert mountains without food and water, hunted by a madman with a .358 Magnum.  Read Deathwatch: It's Ben last hunting expedition and the biggest mistake of his life.
