Why would anyone want to move to New Hampshire? Eleven-year-old Cordelia Liu doesn’t get it. Leaving behind her California home and friends, she must adjust to life East Coast style.

Enrolled in the Elijah Z. Shadow Middle School, Cordelia learns to make sense of the strangeness of a school housed in an enormous mansion. After-school activities are almost nonexistent, and with darkness, falls the silence of student activity. The school, named after an eccentric architect who perished in a mysterious house fire in 1929, has many secrets. Hidden passageways, abandoned halls, tormented spirits, and ghosts are just a few that Cordelia realizes. Who else knows about them?

Cordelia forges a friendship with Benji and Agnes. Together, they befriend the ghosts and lost souls in their quest to help the spirits move on. The danger escalates, however, as the children are challenged by a tantrum-throwing poltergeist. The trio rely on each other when an overnight rescue attempt puts their lives at risk.

The story is filled with mystery, suspense, friendship, and loyalty--you will not want to miss a day of school.  (New Hampshire Great Stone Face Award, 2021)
