In a port city wracked with poverty, Isoka is a gang-leader boss of a crew of ne’er do wells. A sharp, streetwise fighter, she draws from her Well of Melos, which gives her combat powers. The lone soft spot in her life is her sister, whom she cares for and keeps safe. When her illegal magic is discovered by the government, they use her sister to force her into an impossible mission. Either steal the gigantic ghost ship Soliton, which shows up yearly – without a visible crew, or her sister’s safety is forfeit. The problem is no one has ever returned after setting foot on the ship. Once on board, she must fight just to stay alive, much less complete her mission. But, not all is as it seems, and Isoka’s very particular set of skills will come in handy as she attempts to survive and flourish. (Mike Fleming, Juanita High School for Evergreen Book Award) |
