Max is the adorable brother of Ruby, two characters created by Rosemary Wells. In this adventure Ruby is taking Max to the mall to buy him a new pair of pants. He wants a Dragon Shirt. Ruby gets sidetracked and starts to try on dresses. While Ruby is trying on dresses Max falls asleep. Ruby goes to get a different dress, meanwhile, Max wakes up to find Ruby gone and goes to look for her. He ends up finding a Dragon Shirt, puts it on and has a teenager and police officers take him for ice cream while they wait to find Ruby. He gets the ice cream all over the shirt just before Ruby finds him. The shirt is $5.00 the exact amount her mother gave her. Max comes home in the same old pants, but a new Dragon shirt!

I just read this book to my first graders and I got them hooked by showing them the cover of the book with Max wearing the Dragon Shirt and holding an ice cream cone. I asked them “What do you think is going to happen to the ice cream cone?” Then we started to read to find out!

Sample of a few lines…Max was eating ice cream with two policemen and the teenager. There was chocolate, strawberry, and pistachio ice cream all over the dragon shirt. “That's a five dollar shirt,” said the saleslady. Ruby had to be it. “No money left!” said max.

At the beginning of every school year I read a few of the Max and Ruby books. They are so funny and kids fall in love with the characters. They are very predictable text and children laugh every time Max does something he shouldn't. I have a lot of fun making the voices of Max and Ruby hoping to make the book more enjoyable.  (Nicole Howard, Portland, OR)
