For those of you who have read Waugh's other books, Space Race and Earthborn, you have already met children from Ormingat.  Each of those children handled being an alien on planet Earth differently.  Now meet Jacob.  He's a bit different in that his mother is from Earth and his father is from Ormingat.  His father has used Ormingat technology to save Jacob when he was an infant but now Jacob is isolated from other humans.  When he discovers on his 13th birthday that his father is from another planet, he begins to understand why he has always felt as if he didn't belong.
