Eleven year old Yoko is living in Northern Korea at the end of World War II. The family is happy living in the bamboo grove. When the Russian troops move into the area., Yoko and her family decide to escape to Seoul in the South to stay with their grandparents. After many days of walking, riding in trains and hiding, they arrive in Seoul only to find the relatives that they are to stay with have died. With nowhere to go and no money, Yoko, her mother and her sister live in the train station living on scraps of food. When Yoko's mother dies, Yoko and her sister are left on their own. This story is based on the author's life
