Middle child Abbie Wu is about to start middle school, and she is not happy about it. After all, everyone knows the middles are the absolute worst (does anyone like sitting in the middle seat?). At least the cafeteria in middle school serves real food, until the sixth graders learn the best foods, including pizza, are reserved for eighth graders. The situation gets even worse when Abbie and her classmates are asked to pick electives. Her best friends Maxine and Logan quickly find electives in subjects they like, leaving Abbie all alone in study hall to figure out her “thing”. Is Abbie doomed to spend all of middle school in study hall? Will the sixth graders find a way to make their lunches delicious? Will Abbie ever find her calling and come to find that the middle isn’t so bad after all? GARDEN STATE CHILDREN’S BOOK AWARDS, 2019 |
