This story serves as both a prequel and sequel to Taylor's book THE CAY. In the first book, Philip Enright is shipwrecked but saved by Timothy, an elderly African American sea captain. Timothy is killed at the end of the first book. This book picks up five months later. Philip is alone and blind. He is rescued and reunited with his parents. They take him to New York where he has a decision to make. Should he undergo risky surgery which might restore his sight? Throughout the book, you learn details of Philip's life before his unfortunate sea voyage.
