Booktalk #1

Justyce McAllister is a regular teenager who tries to find a route to success through his academics (top of his class) and relationships he builds. Relying on the writings and speeches of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to guide his decisions and to help him make sense of his life, Justyce finds himself facing many dilemmas that will force him to find out who he truly is. A victim of stereotyping and being in the wrong place at the right time, Justyce begins to look at the world differently, finding out who his true friends are. He encounters gangs, drugs, and police prejudice. Moving on to college brings many changes and many new relationships. Will Justyce ever learn who he is and what he believes? (Georgia Peach Book Award, 2020)

Booktalk #2

You all know me. I am the “geek” with swag. I’m the student who gets along with everybody. I’m the guy who studies hard, get good grades, and am obsessed with getting into Yale. So why did that police officer shove me onto the ground and handcuff me? Did my hoodie make him think I was a threat? My best friend lives on the good side of town with his two parents. He is funny and loyal and believes in the American Dream. Why does something even worse happen to him? Was his rap music really that loud? What did we do wrong? Dr. King, you always talked about nonviolence and love and unity, but I don’t see any of that right now. So what should I do? All I have are questions….and I need some answers.
