Booktalk #1

Someone didn’t follow the rules and David’s mother died. (Pause)

Now he’s going to follow every rule so nothing else could go wrong. He knows it isn’t possible logically, but maybe if he’s good it will bring his mother back.

And he definitely doesn’t want to risk someone else’s love, so he does everything he can to keep his grandmother at a distance.

He does develop an unlikely friendship with bossy and sarcastic Primrose A girl who breaks ALL the rules. Should he risk letting someone this unpredictable into his life? (Stella Shafer,
MLIS student, iSchool, University of Washington)

Booktalk #2

Eggs are fragile. Eggs are a new life. Eggs can break.
Meet David and Primose. A very unlikely pair. David is 9, Primrose 13. David lives by rules, Primrose loves to break them. David is afraid, Primrose is fearless. So what on earth brings these two together? David is suffering from the loss of his mother, killed by a freak accident at work. Primrose is suffering from a mother whom she lives with, but is mentally not there. This is a story of the sorrow of loss, the pain of memories, gaining friendships, and learning to move on. Not one of Spinelli's best, but certainly a satisfying read that I recommend to all readers.  (Mark Bobrosky,  LMT, NBCT, Walter Reed Middle School Library)
