The Longest Ride by Nicholas Sparks combines the stories of two couples whose destinies are linked. The story opens with ninety-one-year-old Ira Levinson stranded and injured after his car veers off the road and down an embankment. As he struggles to survive, his wife Ruth, who died nine years earlier, appears to him and they recount stories of their life together. He ran a men’s clothing store and she was a teacher, but art collecting was their passion. Meanwhile, Sophie Danko, an art history major at Wake Forest, is recovering from an ugly breakup, when she meets bull rider Luke Collins. As they fall in love, they deal with the residual problems he has from a near-death rodeo accident. His mom mortgaged the ranch to pay his medical bills. Against his doctor and his mother’s wishes he is back on the bull riding circuit, trying to save the ranch. As their stories converge, the results confirm the power of love.
