Back in the 19th century, a boy by the name of Sholom lived in Russia.  His family was very poor and times were very tough for the family with 12 children.  Afer his mother died, his father remarried but the new stepmother was very mean to the children.  Sholom decided that he needed to use humor to make things better.  This is the story of a boy who discovered writing as a way to express himself.
