You will not be able to put this exciting dystopian thriller by award-winning author Neal Shusterman down!
(Pennsylvania Young Reader’s Choice Award 2017-2018)

Booktalk #2

Scythe is a science fiction book set in the future where the human population is immortal. The only way to die is to be randomly killed or gleaned by professional reapers known as “scythes.” Citra and Rowan are two teenagers who have been selected to apprentice as scythes. They must learn the art of killing and understand the need. But, in a twist of fate, only one will be chosen to become a scythe and the winner will have to glean the loser. (Florida Teens Read (FTR) 2017-2018)

Booktalk #3

Way back in the year is 2042, humans conquered death and now everyone is immortal.  That's right. No one can die. Well they can be deadish but then revived. And they can even decide to become younger. Sounds pretty good, doesn't it? But of course if no one can die, the world gets more and more crowded. So Scythes came into being. The Scythes are specially hand picked and trained in the art of gleaning. Gleaning is killing. But when a Scythe gleans someone, they stay dead. This helps keep the population from becoming overwhelming. When Citra and Rowan are picked to be scythe apprentices, they are both confused. Neither one wants to be a scythe and find the thought of gleaning abhorrent.  They do agree to be apprentices because their families are granted immunity during their training.  The apprenticeship is hard and neither particularly want to be successful. They are both apprenticed to the same Scythe which is unheard of. The Conclave of Scythes allows it to continue on the condition that whoever becomes a scythe must glean the other. There are many unexpected events along the way which will keep the reader going and trying to figure out what is going to happen.

Booktalk #4

Rowan and Citra are 16 year old teens who live in a future Utopian world where poverty, disease -- even death --have been conquered and everything is controlled by the benevolent self-aware AI called Thunderhead. To maintain a sustainable earth population, an organization independent from Thunderhead made up of Scythes is created to randomly cull members of the human population. New Scythes are chosen, sometimes against their will, and forced to learn the “art of killing” their fellow humans – something that has long had a complicated moral component. Rowan and Citra, in dangerous competition with each other, soon learn that there is cruelty and dark corruption in the Scythe organization – a fact that may cost them their lives. This exciting and thought provoking book is first in the Arc of a Scythe series. (Arc of a Scythe #1)  (Colorado Blue Spruce Award, Booktalk by Tana Lucero.)
