 Erin’s mother left a year ago and she has finally sent for Erin. Although she is supposed to go by bus, Erin accidentally, on purpose, loses her ticket and decides to hitchhike to see her mother. Erin gets picked-up by Mae and Levi who are going to hike five miles to a lake in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. While the three are hiking a thunderstorm breaks out. The lightening strikes spook Mae and she takes off running. Levi starts to chase her and sprains his ankle. Erin has to go after Mae. She finds Mae but now they are both hopelessly lost in the mountains. It will take all their survival skills to make it through hunger, freezing nights, exhaustion, and injuries during their six day ordeal.  (Pennsylvania Young Reader’s Choice Awards nominee, 2008-2009)
