It
seems that they can't even sit down to dinner without the conversation
turning to war. It's what is on everyone's mind. Grandfather
is a confederate loyalist and can't understand why his son doesn't share
his beliefs. Father is an officer in the Union Army and he is heading
back to the war any time now. And Jem is torn between the two men
he loves. Jem has come to believe what his father believes and wants
to go fight for Mr. Lincoln also. But he's too young. His only
chance of fighting in the war is to run away and enlist. So that's
what he does. His best friend Hank comes along too and together the
boys learn what war is all about. |
