Just as Selznick has done in previous books, the first part of this story is told in pictures.  The story begins in 1766 when a young boy is the sole survivor of a ship wreck.  He and his dog and rescued and brought to London.  Here the boy falls in love with the theater and begins the family legacy.  Generation after generation took to the stage and became well known actors.  Until the youngest Marvel refused to follow in the family's footsteps.  From here, the book switches to narrative and takes up the story again in 1990.  Here we meet Joseph Jervis who has just run away from boarding school and made his way to London to find his uncle.  As the two stories converge, we learn much about the history of the acting family and the life of Joseph and his family.
