In the mid-1950s, eleven-year-old Azalea is not happy to be sent to her grandmother’s home in Arkansas to help with her injured foot. And grandma doesn’t even seem to want her help in the first place! While in the town of Paris Junction, Azalea is introduced to a motley crew of characters, such as the town troublemaker, the town gossip, and Billy Wong, a ChineseAmerican boy who helps his uncle at the family grocery store. The story volleys back and forth between Azalea and Billy Wong, sharing the point of view of each character. This story is inspired by actual events of Chinese immigrants who made their way to the Deep South of the United States during a time of segregation.
