Back in the old days, there was a widow with 2 daughters. Rose was cross & mean & didn't know "beans from birds' eggs." Blanche was sweet & kind & "sharp as 40 crickets." Blanche had to do all the hard work for her mother and sister.
One day she followed an old witch woman in the woods.  She helped the old woman with her chores and saw many magical things.  She was rewarded with plain eggs that said "take me."
She arrived home in a carriage with gold, silver & diamonds that came from the eggs.
Well, you know who had to have some of those fine things for themselves.  But witches and mean little girls who don't do as they are told don't make a happy ending for anyone but Blanche.   (Paula Gannaway,  librarian,  paula.gannaway@lcu.edu)
