Booktalk #1

Imagine living in a world where everyone has to live below the surface in a world called Detritus.  The enemy is some alien group called the Krell. The only way to fight the Krell is to become a pilot. Spensa’s lifelong dream is to become a pilot which is going to be very difficult.  Her father was a pilot who died after leaving his team. No one wants to see Spensa in flight school.  Spensa gets a lucky break and makes it into flight school. Will she be able to succeed and become one of the pilots who fights against the Krell and helps to save Detritus? Spensa’s adventure is like living in the world of the video game Spaced Invaders. Check out Skyward and become a part of Spensa’s adventure. (Prepared by: Michelle Greene, Lamar High School, michelle.greene@darlington.k12.sc.us)  (South Carolina Book Awards, 2020-2021)

Booktalk #2

On a planet constantly being attacked by the alien Krell, humans are in danger of being wiped out. Only the brave pilots who risk their lives to fight the Krell can keep their hope alive. Spensa has always dreamed of being one of those pilots and cannot wait until she can start flight school. However, as the daughter of a traitor who deserted his fellow pilots, that dream is a long shot. When Spensa discovers an old spacecraft in an unknown cavern she feels hope that she may be able to fulfil her dream after all. Getting the spacecraft to fly is one thing. Getting her father’s name cleared is another. Does Spensa have what it takes to “Claim the Stars” and find out what really happened to her father at the Battle of Alta? (Book Talk by Mary Beth Kurspahić, Risdon Middle School ) (Washington Evergreen Book Award nominee 2021)
