It's
1968 and Buddy is turning 12 years old. Her classmates all call her dummy
and Dumb Buddy. She wakes up excited about her birthday. She wants to believe
that her whole world will change today. Hopefully for the better. Her father
has promised to take her to see the dolphins. This time, she'll be close
enough to touch them. They visit a second rate dolphin park where the dolphins
are kept in an overcrowded tank and seem to be mistreated. Buddy feels
an immediate affection for the dolphins she sees that day. She relates
to their mistreatment. She wants to return and she and her grandfather
keep visiting them in secret. As Buddy learns more about the dolphins,
she becomes determined to set them free. But how can she help them when
she can't even help herself. When she is finally diagnosed with dyslexia
she begins to feel more and more confident about her abilities. Will her
newfound courage and self confidence allow her to help the captive dolphins?
