There is a force that is very important. What do we call this amazing force? It is gravity. But what is it? Well, you could say gravity behaves a little like invisible glue, holding everything onto the surface of Earth, even holding oceans down and keeping the air from floating away into outer space. What would happen if Earth did not have gravity? Everything would simply fly off the surface of the planet. Water, air, people, animals, objects, all would go hurtling into space. Gravity is also important in the universe. Gravity is the force that holds the planets in orbit around the sun and keeps the moon in orbit around Earth. Gravity is very useful to humans. When we launch a satellite into space, it is gravity that keeps the satellite in orbit around Earth. Do you like to ride the roller coaster or go skiing or sledding? Gravity is the force that makes the rides and those sports possible, pulling you down when you are up. Although scientists have been studying gravity for many years, this force is still a puzzle. Learn more about this astonishing force. (May Harn Liumay@mailbox.sc.edu, librarian)
