Booktalk #1

Thirteen year old Egbert has one of the worst families you can imagine.  He is constantly abused by his brothers and his father usually takes their side.  They live on an island and work farming ugly fruit.  Egbert knows little about the outside world except what he reads in books.  He lives a life of hard work and pirates.  When his father suddenly announces the family is going to the island of Sunrise, Egbert is thrilled.  He will get to see a life beyond his drab existence.  When they get to Sunrise, they are taken in by a rich businessman and Egbert does get to see another way of living.  One of nice clothes, enough food to eat and people who are nice to him.  But things may not be all they appear to be.  Join Egbert on an adventure with pirates, hidden treasures and swashbuckling fun.

Booktalk #2

Egg is an ordinary boy living with his uninterested father, abusive older brother, and obnoxious older sister on Deadweather Island. When his dad plans a sudden and mysterious trip to Sunrise Island for his family, they find themselves guests of the wealthy Pembroke family, and Egg becomes interested in their beautiful and feisty daughter, Millicent.

During his family’s stay, a hot air balloon accident seemingly makes Egg an orphan and permanent guest of the Pembrokes. Though he is sad about his family, his life with the Pembrokes is much better than his life on Deadweather, but circumstances are not what they seem, and it isn’t long before Egg is running for his life from an assassin, defending his family’s home, and searching for a map that leads to a mysterious treasure with the help of a crazy, one-handed cabin boy named Guts.   (South Carolina Junior Book Award nominee 2015,  Prepared by: Nikki Parton, Honea Path Middle School, kparton@anderson2.k12.sc.us)
