Booktalk #1 Have you ever been trapped inside your house during a blizzard? Did you go stir-crazy? Did you start to run out of food? Well, author John Rocco did. During the winter of 1978, over 40 inches of snow fell in New England!! This book is the story of how 10- year-old John Rocco survived that blizzard. When the snow first started falling all the children were extremely excited - especially when they got out of school early! Eventually, however, snow-days turned long and boring and then food began to run out. Luckily, a small, but inventive, boy with tennis rackets strapped to his feet, discovered he could walk on top of the snow and rescued his neighbors from boredom and hunger. Taking requests from his neighbors and family he slushed over to the store with his sled - stopping along the way for a little bit of fun. Creatively hidden within the illustrations are the words for the days of the week. See if you can find them! (Pennsylvania Young Reader's Choice Award Program, 2017) Booktalk #2 The weather forecast is calling for snow!! Everyone is excited about seeing the first flakes. All the kids are talking about being out of school and having snowball fights and sledding! Then it starts snowing…and it doesn’t stop. A blizzard hits… the snow isn’t fun anymore! When the storm calms there are 40 inches of snow on the ground and not much food left in the pantry. John (the author and illustrator of this tale) is just a kid, but the only one light enough to walk on top of all that snow. The store is over a mile from his house. Will he be able to make it there and back on his tennis racket snow shoes and bring food to his family? What will he find on the way to the store? John is ready to have his own adventure in the snow!
