The time is 1899 and 15-year-old Rose is about to set out on a life journey that she had never anticipated.  She is living on her parent's plantation in South Carolina when she meets Rene Dumarest, a silk merchant from France.  Although he is much older than Rose, he begins courting her and wants to marry her.  Rose doesn't love him but believes that she will be helping out her family by marrying this wealthy man.  Her family is in dire financial straights.  Rene moves Rose to Brooklyn to begin their life together.  How will Rose manage as a teen bride in a new home?  This story is based on the lives of the author's grandparents.
