This book is the sequel to the author's A STITCH IN TIME. The series follows the Chelmsford family of Salem, Massachusetts through several generations. BROKEN DAYS takes place during the years 1811 and 1812. The United States faces yet another war and the Chelmsford family contemplate what it will mean for their young country. The family is surprised by a visitor who claims to be the daughter of Thankful Chelmsford. Thankful had been taken by Indians years before during a trip to the frontier. Now, Thankful has died and sent her daughter back east. Walking Breeze has been raised by the Shawnee and doesn't know how to fit in with the Chelmsford family. Her cousin Ebie doesn't want her to. Ebie wants to be the only granddaughter in the house. She resents Walking Breeze and steals her proof that she is indeed Thankful's daughter. Without this proof, Walking Breeze is relegated to being a servant in the home and later being sent to the textile mills to work. Will Walking Breeze be accepted into the family? To find out, read BROKEN DAYS, by Ann Rinaldi.
