Life
is anything but happy and carefree for 14-year-old Georgia Nicholson. Her
parents are threatening to move the family to New Zealand for the summer
just as she lands the boyfriend of her dreams, The Sex God, a.k.a.
Robbie. On the Bright Side is the sequel to Angus, Thongs, and Full Frontal
Snogging by British author Louise Rennison. Written in diary form, we get
to see a day-to-day and sometimes minute-by-minute account of Georgia’s
rollercoaster life. Will Georgia evade the New Zealand move? And if she
does, can she ever hope to hold onto the affections of Robbie the Sex God?
A glossary of hip British terms in this book helps us Yanks keep up. If
you need a good laugh, pick up this book, but only if you’re not afraid
to laugh out loud. P.S., in spite of the title, the closest that this book
gets to sex is “full frontal snogging,” also known as ‘kissing’ in the
colonies.
Curriculum Connection: The very best quality of this book is that
it is so much fun to read. It might make an interesting addition to a discussion
of the differences and similarities between the cultures of Britain and
America, but for the most part, it’s just a lot of fun. (Karen Wiedmeier,
