Growing up in the 1800s, John Wesley Powell loved nature.  He loved learning about different plants and animals and dreamed of becoming a scientist.  He fought during the Civil War and lost his arm in a battle.  But that didn't stop him from pursuing his dream.  His dream of leading a scientific expedition down the Colorado River and into the Grand Canyon.
