Based on true events, Kentuckian John Wallen was only seventeen when he enlisted in the Army. Being a soldier during World War II was tough enough, but being the youngest recruit in the Pacific was a big challenge. While in the Philippines, he befriends a little girl with a very special heart-shaped birthmark and they help each other in ways friends would do. Because she does not speak English, his new friend calls him “Tucky Jo,” although they do not need a common language to share kindness, friendship and loyalty. After the war, John returns home, and after many years, he and “Little Heart” meet again in a beautiful twist of fate. (Pennsylvania Young Reader’s Choice Award 2017-2018)
