Before Clara Barton earned the
nickname of “The Angel of the Battlefield” from taking
care of wounded soldiers during the Civil War, and before
she founded the American Red Cross, she was very shy. She
had to be home-schooled because her classmates teased her
so badly because of her lisp. Clara’s best friends were
plants and animals. She was so good at taking care of
these living things, that her older brother Davie always
