The Red Death is raging.  People infected with this disease die a very quick, very horrible death.  Poe delights in describing all the gory details of the death.  Prince Prospero decided to hold a masquerade ball in his castle to keep the disease out.  All the guests come and enjoy themselves.  Till a stranger appears dressed in THE MASQUE OF THE RED DEATH!
