Why does Norris Kaplan have an extra t-shirt in his backpack when he goes to his new high school in Austin, Texas? The answer; ridiculous sweating due to climate shock. Norris is black French Canadian and when his mother moves them to Austin, Texas the heat is only one of his challenges to overcome. The other one is; how does one start a hockey league in Austin, Texas?  Norris also takes on this challenge as the new student and one of the few students of color in a mostly white school. All of the newness of American culture, climate, and recreation is the opposite of what he is used to and he clashes and cavorts with all the changes in unexpected ways. The author of this hilarious high school own-voice coming of age story is a master of comedic delivery. I guess his mother wanted him to be a doctor but he writes inside the cover of his first YA book “To my mother, Belize. I would have been a terrible doctor, mom. People would have died.” This is a great choice for fans of authors such as Gordon Korman or Trevor Noah. (Kathleen Story, Eastlake High School for Evergreen Book Award)
