In
1820, the Nantucket whaler Essex suffered a fate never before heard of
among the whalers. A sixty ton sperm whale rammed and sank their
ship -- seemingly in revenge for the whales killed by the crew. And
now, left with no ship and miles from any land, the twenty crewmen set
off in three small boats and scant provisions to sustain them on their
journey. For the next three months, these men endured unspeakable
deprivation. We know what happened from the accounts of the survivors
including the 14 year old cabin boy, Thomas Nickerson. Tales of starvation,
thirst and, yes, even cannibalism, make of the story of the survival of
the men from the Whaleship Essex. |
