The worst epidemic of cholera occurred in the 19th century.  There was no cure and no one understood what caused the illness.  What they found was that conditions in the nineteenth century were ripe for the spread of this little bacteria.  It thrives in polluted water sources and sewer systems.  Crowded, filthy dwellings filled with downtrodden people are a perfect breeding ground for cholera.  At it's height, it killed hundreds of thousands in less than three years.
