Billy,
Daniel, Stephanie and Mark live on Ocracoke Island on the Outer Bank of
North Carolina. They love old Mrs. McNemmish's outrageous tales of
the great pirate Blackbeard. She claims that she's related to him
and has kept secret for 70 years the whereabouts of his hidden treasure.
She tells them that when she dies whoever buries her at sea will be greatly
rewarded. When she dies a few days later, the kids steal her casket,
depositing in the ocean, almost drowning in the process. Later at
her house they find a map in an old chest and beneath it a passage to an
underground cave. Zeke, who'd been houding Mrs. McNemmish about the
whereabouts of the treasure for ages, comes upon the kids, steals the map
and locks them in the tunnel. Will they find an escape? Will
Zeke get to the treasure before them? That's Mystery at Blackbeard's
Cove by Audrey Penn. (Leslie Kanno, Christa McAuliffe School Library) |
