Marja is always being told that she is too little to help the family and do the things her sister does.  She is too little to go to school.  She is too little to help her father with the lumber.  Living in Canada in the 19th century, she has a different life than what you may know.  But when she turns seven, her father decides that it is time for her to go to school and learn English.  He gives her a pair of skis to use to get to school.  Marja loves the feeling of gliding across the snow on her skies.
