REPRESENTING SUPERDOLL
New York : Dell, 1989.
IL YA RL 6.5
ISBN 014038555X
Interesting contrast between a country girl with some depth of character and a city girl with beauty and a nagging mom. Verna, a bus student, is apprehensive about making city friends but she does become part of a group that includes a girl who's mom enters her into the Miss Hybrid Seed Contest. She wins a trip to New York City and Verna is asked to accompany her and eventually stars as she stumps the panel on a tv show. Verna seems to grow in the book, gaining confidence to explore New York City and meet a boy set up by the agency. Darleen seems to come to terms with her wishes not being the same as her mom's. There is enough detail about pageant life to make someone think again before being trapped by the romantic side.
