Ira, an adorable golden retriever, is born to be a service dog.  There are many tasks he must learn in order to be a good helper. He must learn how to pick up dropped keys, open doors by pressing a wheel-chair access sign, stay in one place for long periods of time and even turn on a light switch. He has many helpers in his training – especially a sixth grade teacher and her class.  Large colorful photographs depict Ira’s transformation from puppy to guide dog for the blind, proving that dogs really are man’s best friend.  (Jean B. Bellavance for Pennsylvania Young Reader's Choice Awards, 2007-2008)
