10-year-old Mavis has spent her entire life moving from place to place with her flighty mother. When she moves to Landry, Alabama she wants to finally be able to stay in one place and find a best friend. She does just that when she meets Rose, the daughter of her “highfalutin” mother's boss. Mavis announces to Rose that she will be her best friend. The girls are from opposite backgrounds; Rose lives in a huge perfect home, and Mavis, whose mother is their maid/cook, is poor yet manages to survive wherever her mother finds her next job. Resilient Mavis proves a good friend to Rose. Having a can-do personality as opposed to Rose's worried, reserved one, Mavis hatches a plan so bold, brave, and a bit dangerous (involving a runaway dog they both crave) that it tests the friendship of these completely opposite girls. Wonderland is a gem of a friendship story, with an impressive dog as well. (Pennsylvania Young Reader’s Choice Award 2019-2020) |
