A fence. A doe. A housekeeper in the ICU. Newman effectively uses different points of view and different poetic forms to give voice to the night Matthew Shepard was murdered. Shepard was a gay 21 year old University of Wyoming college student left a Laramie bar with two males. They beat him, tied him to a fence and left him to die. Matthew wasn’t discovered until 18 hours later. He was taken to a hospital, but never regained consciousness. He died five days later.
