The main character, Yanyan, in An Ocean Apart, A World Away is based off of a minor character in the novel Ties That Bind, Ties That Break, also by Lensey Namioka.  Yanyan has wanted to be doctor and study western medicine ever since she was twelve years old.  When she travels to Shanghai to say good-bye to her best friend, who is leaving for America, Yanyan gains the respect of her oldest brother.  She also becomes close to his friend Baoshu, who is involved in a Manchu organization that is trying to overthrow the Chinese government.  However, Yanyan will not allow anything to get in the way of her dream of becoming a doctor.  She leaves China to attend Cornell University.  In America, she encounters culture shock, as well as a hard academic schedule, but she manages to prove that she is capable of achieving anything she sets her mind to.    ( Mollie Carter,  South Carolina Book Awards, 2006)
