Awasin
and Jamie are neighbors from very different backgrounds. Jamie was at boarding
school after his parents died until his trapper uncle could no longer afford
the expense. Awasin is the son of the leader of the Cree camp that neighbored
Jamie and his uncle. When the adults are off on a trip to sell their trappings,
the camp is approached by a group of Chipeweyans looking for ammunition
to continue their search for the life source -- the deer. Awasin decided
to personally deliver the loan to be sure the group is not lying. He sees
starving people and by error of interpretation has signed up the boys for
the full trip in search of the deer. Awasin and Jamie are looking for adventure
and they get it. From running rapids to surviving in arctic conditions,
constructing shelter and hiding their food from wolverines, they learn
to respect each others fears instead of teasing each other into more and
more situations requiring bravery. The weather is their rival -- not each
other. |
