Based on the true life life of Lale Sokolov, the story follows Lale as he arrives in Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp in 1942. Lale's parents had been told that if he volunteered to go, the rest of the family would be safe.  Little did they know what was actually going on in the camps. In order to save himself, Lale agreed to do a despicable job. He was put to work as a tattooist. With the position came a little more food and a little security. But what he finds out is that he was now the one who tattooed the numbers on the arms of incoming Jews. He endured the screams and the disapproval of other Jews so that he could survive. When a young lady comes in, Lale finds himself attracted to her. But living in such horror, is there any way that Gita and Lale could ever find a tiny bit of happiness?
