The year is 1999 and the country of Sudan is still embroiled in a massive civil war.  Stephen's small village is peaceful enough but it is not immune to outside influences.  Whenever the aid workers drop food and supplies from the airlift, the soldiers tend to raid the village shortly after.  That is why Stephen's mother tells the boys to go into hiding after the air drop.  The soldiers were known to force young boys into the army and Stephen's mother wants to protect him.  So Stephen and his two friends do as they are told.  When they return to the village, they find it burned and their families dead.  What can three young boys do alone?  Where can they go?
