Mississippi at the start of the Civil War.  Shanks and his family believe that the war won't last too long.  The South will have the Yankees running home really soon.  Shanks wishes he could go off to war with his father and his older brother, but he's only 11 and too young to fight.  He must remain at home with his mother, his grandparents and their slave Buck.  As the war drags on, Shanks finds that his view of right and wrong changes.  Maybe slavery isn't right after all.
