BLACK HANDS, WHITE SAILS : THE STORY OF AFRICAN-AMERICAN WHALERS
New York : Scholastic Press, 1999.
IL 5-8  RL 6.0
ISBN 0590483137
Show different pictures of whales and ask anyone if they know anything about the different ones shown.  Bring a candle, girdle, and hurricane lamp with you and ask participants what people used in the 1700-1900's to make these things.  Explain the importance of the whaling industry to them.  Or you might want to read the part in Moby Dick that describes the white whale.  Introduce this book and add importance to the African-American contributions to whaling, including free and enslaved peoples.  Go briefly into a history of slavery, if needed.
